John Allen is a senior from Trussville, Alabama, studying Poultry Science. He is interning with the National Turkey Federation in Washington, D.C.

Position Title: Legislative Affairs Intern

What made you choose to apply? “Once I started taking classes within the college of ag, I realized that the agricultural industry was where I wanted to build a career. So I was tasked with finding where I “fit” in that industry. I have always been interested in the ‘legal’ side of things as opposed to the scientific side. So I began seeking out opportunities that allowed me to play to my strengths. I recently made the decision to apply for law school and I thought that an experience in D.C. would help to further diversify and expand my understanding of legislative affairs.”

How did you find out about the internship? “Our internship coordinator, Dr. Hess, passed it down in an email.”

What are you hoping to learn or accomplish during the internship? “I would like to see to what extent politics and agricultural policy effect the industry. I would also like to have an understanding of how agricultural policy takes shape and then is implemented in the field.”

What advice would you give to students who are hoping to secure an internship in the future? “Do not be afraid to advocate for yourself. Do not come across as arrogant, but do not be afraid to pursue an internship that you are interested in. Let the employer know how intrigued your are about their area.”
