Auburn College of Agriculture alumnus Scott Hutchins, deputy under secretary for USDA

Auburn University’s College of Agriculture will host Scott Hutchins, deputy under secretary for the USDA’s research, education and economics mission area, as speaker for its E.T. York Distinguished Lecturer Series Sept. 26. The York Lecture will begin at 4 p.m. in the Auburn University Hotel and Conference Center’s Grand Ballroom. The event is free and open to the public.

Hutchins will speak on the topic “Five Overarching Themes That Will Define the Next Era of Agriculture in the United States.”

Hutchins is a 1981 graduate of the Auburn College of Agriculture’s Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology.

As a USDA deputy under secretary, Hutchins serves as chief scientist and oversees the Agricultural Research Service, the National Agricultural Statistics Service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture. He assumed the position in early 2019, following a 32-year career with Corteva Agriscience, formerly Dow AgroSciences.

Hutchins is a fellow and past president of the Entomological Association of America and serves as an adjunct professor of entomology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

ABOUT THE YORK LECTURE SERIES

The E.T. York Distinguished Lecturer Series features internationally known speakers who address issues related to agriculture, food, the environment and natural resources. The series was established in Auburn’s College of Agriculture in 1981 through a gift from Auburn alumni E.T. and Vam Cardell York.

E.T. York served as director of the Alabama Cooperative Extension System from 1959 to 1962 before heading the Federal Extension Service in Washington, D.C. He later served as provost and vice president for agriculture at the University of Florida and then as chancellor of the State University System of Florida.
