Auburn University’s Kip Balkcom, Eddie McGriff and Simerjeet Virk will be among the researchers presenting at the National Conservation Systems Cotton and Rice, Southern Soybean and Corn, Delta States Irrigation and Southern Precision Ag conferences being held Jan. 27 and 28 in Memphis.
Balkcom, a research agronomist for USDA-ARS Soil Dynamics Research in Auburn, is an affiliate faculty member of the Auburn Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences. He will speak on nitrogen considerations for rye cover crops before cotton.
McGriff, a regional agent for the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and Virk, an associate professor in the Auburn Department of Biosystems Engineering, will present on the opportunities and challenges of using spray drones for cotton defoliation. They will present with Alabama farmer Nick McMichen.
This will be the 28th year Auburn, along with six other Southern land-grant institutions, have co-sponsored the conferences. Other institutions include Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, Texas A&M University, the University of Arkansas, the University of Missouri and the University of Tennessee.
“The conference is a gathering of the most knowledgeable researchers and specialists in the mid-states and midsouth states, and highly productive farmers who produce cotton, rice, soybeans and corn,” said John LaRose Jr., steering committee chairman. “This conference has the reputation as being the No. 1 place in the United States where all producers can learn the latest agriculture production methods and techniques being utilized by leading agriculture farmers, researchers and the ag industry.”
