Appel named interim associate dean for research, associate director for AAES

Arthur Appel, Faculty Endowed Professor of entomology, has been named the Auburn University College of Agriculture’s interim associate dean for research and interim associate director of the Alabama Agricultural Experiment Station, effective June 1.

In his interim role, Appel will lead the faculty and student research activities of the College of Agriculture as well as programs and activities throughout the interdisciplinary centers and research units of the experiment station.

“Dr. Appel has been chosen for this post because of his prior success in the role,” said Paul Patterson, dean of the College of Agriculture. “He has experienced the unique responsibilities and challenges of this position, has a thorough understanding of the research enterprise and can hit the ground running on day one. This will be vital in order for us to continue the high volume of research activity from our programs.”

Appel previously served as interim associate dean for research and associate director of AAES from 2014 to 2016. He also served as interim dean of the College of Agriculture and interim director of AAES from July 2015 to February 2016.

“I look forward to working with our faculty, students and staff to continue to expand our research activities throughout the college and experiment station,” Appel said.

Appel came to Auburn as an assistant professor in 1985. He was named associate professor in 1990 and full professor in 1997. He served as chair of the Department of Entomology and Plant Pathology from 2005 to 2014.
