Shannon wins honor for distance ed efforts

Dennis Shannon, a professor in Auburn University’s Department of Crop, Soil and Environmental Sciences, has been recognized by a national distance education coalition for his work in developing a multi-institutional, multidisciplinary online graduate degree program in soil, water and environmental science through the Agricultural Interactive Distance Education Alliance, or AG*IDEA.

AG*IDEA is a consortium of universities that collaboratively offer fully online graduate degree and certificate programs in agriculture and related fields. It is an affiliate of the broader Great Plains IDEA, which presented Shannon its 2015 Grow It! Award for his leadership in development of the degree.

Shannon heads up his department’s distance education program and led efforts to gain approval for the soil, water and environmental science master’s program at Auburn. In addition to Auburn, cooperating universities in the degree program include Texas Tech and North Carolina State universities and the University of Georgia.
