The Campus Food Pantry, a service available to financially struggling students, is starting off the year well-stocked, thanks to the College of Agriculture’s Agriculture Student Council, better known as Ag Council. Ag Council members delivered 230 pounds of non-perishable food items and toiletries to the pantry, collected during the organization’s October food drive. The donation included 10 cases of peanut butter provided by the Alabama Peanut Producer’s Association.
“I’m humbled by the amount of donations we collected,” said Caleb Hicks, Ag Council vice president. “It’s great to see students and employees come together to fight hunger.”
The Campus Food Pantry was established in 2012 and is a service of Auburn Cares, an Office of Student Affairs division that serves as an advocate, liaison or resource to students in times of need, distress or emergency.
Sarah Grace Walters, Auburn Cares coordinator, says the donation provided much-needed assistance to the pantry. Walters says that the number of students requesting food assistance has increased each year and that at the time of the Ag Council’s food drive, pantry stock was at an all-time low.
“We are so grateful to our campus partners, as their kindness is truly what allows us to serve so many students in need,” she says.
Encouraged by the favorable participation, Hicks says the Ag Council will engage in more community service projects. “I hope we’re able to do more events like this in the future to help others in our community.”
