Research

RESEARCH

Dr. Poudel’s research focuses on strategies to control foodborne pathogens, particularly Salmonella and Campylobacter, to enhance the safety of poultry products. By investigating how these pathogens colonize and spread within poultry, he aims to understand and reduce Salmonella transmission through aerosol routes and its impact on respiratory and gut microbiomes. His work explores beneficial bacteria that may prevent Salmonella colonization, ultimately contributing to improved poultry health and food safety. Another area of his research focuses on uncovering transmission routes of Campylobacter, including aerosol and potential vertical transmission from parent to offspring. In addition, his research addresses the challenge of antibiotic resistance in poultry litter by identifying compounds that limit horizontal gene transfer events among bacteria, thereby reducing the spread of antibiotic resistance genes from poultry farms to the environment. By leveraging molecular and microbiological techniques, his goal is to provide insights that support safer poultry farming and a safer food supply.
