Outstanding Publication Award

About the Award

The College of Agriculture Outstanding Publication Award is to foster academic scholarship and excellence by recognizing tenure-track and non-tenure-track faculty members, including the research professor series and research fellow IV, for publishing in top-tier peer-reviewed journals with a high-impact factor or for high-quality publications that have a major scientific or economic impact.

Value of Outstanding Publications

The academic community uses “impact factor” (IF), citations and other metrics to assess the value and quality of a research publication. Papers published in high IF journals tend to have broader readership and more citations. The IF of the journals a researcher publishes in has a durable impact on their career. Grant panels and search committees use this information to determine the scholarship and worth of a researcher. Prospective students and postdocs also use IF metrics to select major professors. Many independent academic ranking organizations use number of papers published by faculty in top journals and citations as key metrics for ranking institutions.

ELIGIBILITY

 AWARD CATEGORIES

This award has three categories:

  1. Publications in Journals with High Impact Factor defined as publications in peer-reviewed High Impact Journals or top-tier journals. Each department will determine what journals qualify as high impact/top-tier journals in their discipline(s) and may nominate up to two papers for this category. Other examples of qualifying publications include publications selected as top papers of the year by journals, editors or other external groups. All nominations for this category will be evaluated by a committee. The committee will select deserving nominations (i.e., publications) for this award recognition.
  2. Publications with High Scientific Impact defined as publications in peer-reviewed journals that have had a high scientific impact measured by citation counts. Each department may nominate one publication for this category, but only one qualified nomination will be recognized college-wide annually in this category.
  3. Publications with High Economic Impact defined as publications in peer-reviewed journals that have resulted in high economic impact on Alabama’s agriculture and state/national economy. Each department may nominate one publication for this category, but only one qualified nomination will be recognized college-wide annually in this category.

EVALUATION

All nominations will be evaluated by the College Research Awards Committee.
