ABSTRACTS
We invited abstract submissions from from you all and will give out prizes for the top graduate student oral presentations and posters, just like we did last year. The abstract submission deadline was April 2, 2025 to get the spot on the schedule.
RUBRICS
ORAL PRESENTATIONS
RELEVANCE AND RATIONALE
- Title is concise, informative, and relevant for presentation content.
- Introduction and background with pertinent literature cited.
- Demonstrates awareness of knowledge gaps.
- Clearly establishes the context of the work and why it matters.
- Justifies the need for the study.
- Objectives clearly stated.
MATERIALS AND METHODS
- Materials and methods (study design) clear, concise, and appropriate to address problem(s)/question(s).
RESULTS
- Interpretation of results and analysis are clear, concise, and accurate.
DISCUSSION/CONCLUSION
- Significance and implications of results clearly discussed.
AESTHETICS/ORGANIZTION
- Slides have no grammatical errors and are not excessively wordy
- Slides use appropriate fonts, font sizes, high contrast images (for example, avoiding color schemes that are hard to distinguish for colorblind participants like red/green).
- Logical order; minimum redundancy.
- Effective use & description of visuals (i.e. photos, diagrams, figures, and tables); do they support the presentation narrative?
PRESENTATION SKILLS
- Appropriate volume (uses microphone if available) & speed of speech.
- Clear communication (e.g., context, concise, conveys message); please note, score should not be dependent on audio equipment.
- Smooth transitions between presentation slides and sections.
ANSWER TO QUESTIONS
- Effective use of time; 10 minutes (8 minutes talk, 2 minutes fielding questions) with appropriate balance across presentation sections, with time to field audience questions effectively.
