Mullenix, husband runners-up in federation competition

Kim Mullenix, assistant professor and Extension specialist in the Department of Animal Sciences at Auburn, and husband Daniel were named second runners-up in the Alabama Farmers Federation’s 2015 Excellence in Agriculture competition. Winners were announced during the organization’s annual Commodity Producers Conference held recently in Montgomery.

The Excellence in Agriculture competition is open to young people who are involved in agriculture but don’t earn more than half their income from farming.

The Mullenixes currently own a small cattle herd that is managed on her family’s Newnan, Georgia, farm. The couple also has a small flock of backyard chickens at their home in Beauregard and markets the eggs locally. She earned her B.S. and M.S. degrees in animal sciences from Auburn in 2008 and 2010, respectively. He is an Auburn engineering alumnus  who is employed as a precision agriculture specialist with Decatur-based Agri-AFC LLC.

Also during the federation’s commodity conference, Garrett Henry, a 2003 Auburn agricultural business and economics, and his family were recognized as Alabama’s Outstanding Young Farm Family for 2015. As winners, the Henrys received a new General Motors pickup truck, a John Deere Gator and a year’s use of a John Deere tractor. The contest honors farmers 18 -35 who stand out as agricultural leaders on their farms and in their communities. The Henrys raise beef cattle on their Hope Hull farm.
