Programs that connect academics & the community
The Auburn University Shellfish Laboratory also serves as a base of operations in coastal Alabama for Extension and outreach efforts to commercial seafood stakeholders conducted by specialists and agents in the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Typically, Extension and outreach efforts are focused on the needs of the oyster industry but include all aspects of commercial seafood production, distribution and marketing.

Commercial oyster aquaculture training, assistance & advice
One of the centers of our outreach is ongoing training, assistance, and advice to both potential and current oyster farmers. We offer options, upon arrangement, to train potential oyster farmers, as well as guest speakers and periodic ‘boot camps’ to cover important topics in half day sessions.
Workforce Development
The Commercial Oyster Aquaculture Sector Training (COAST) Program
Access to a trained workforce is a limitation to expansion of the oyster aquaculture industry. Through funding provided by Sea Grant, the COAST program provides funding for apprentices to learn hands-on from industry members in Alabama and Mississippi.
Business Planning
Our extension team includes Rusty Grice, an Oyster Aquaculture Business Specialist with Auburn University, who provides information regarding business planning, permitting, and insurance. Rusty travels throughout the US Gulf Coast to provide training in these areas.
Oyster Health and Disease
Dr. Andrea Tarnecki, an Assistant Extension Professor with Auburn University, specializes in microbiology. She provides testing for dermo (Perkinsus marinus) when needed. She also stays up-to-date on research addressing oyster mortalities, harmful algae, and other aspects of oyster health and disease as it relates to aquaculture and wild populations.
Seafood Safety
Many environmental factors impact seafood safety and there are numerous regulations in place to make seafood safer for consumption. We help provide answers to questions regarding the safety of oysters for consumers and help translate regulations for those harvesting oysters.
