Dr. Saravanan Ramiah
Shanmugam is currently working as Assistant Research Professor in Biosystems
Engineering Department at Auburn University, Alabama, USA. He has previously
worked as a DST Inspire Faculty in the School of Chemical and Biotechnology,
SASTRA Deemed University, India. His primary research interests focus on the
creation value from wastes. He received his Doctor of Philosophy degree from
University of Windsor, Ontario, Canada. He has worked as an Associate Scientist
in AgraCity Crop & Nutrition Ltd., Wallaceburg, Ontario, Canada. During his
tenure he was part of the team that registered two biofertilizer products
towards commercialization and submitted the dossier for three other products to
Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA). He has received Post-Doctoral
Fellowship from Auburn University, Alabama, USA. He has received numerous
research grants such as Alabama Agricultural Experimental Station (AAES)- SEED
grant, Auburn University Intramural Grants Program and Ocean University of
China (OUC)-Auburn University (AU) grants program, Core Research Grant from Department
of Science and Technology (DST), India and form Science and Engineering
Research Board (SERB), India. He has worked closely in various industry
projects such as from Chameleon Speciality Chemicals, UK, EID Parry
Nutraceuticals Pvt. Ltd., India and for CUB-CSR, India. He has founded a
start-up “ENVIROHIL Solutions” and currently incubated at ABLEST-TBI, SASTRA,
India. The start-up focuses on converting organic wastes into food, fuel,
fertilizer, and a variety of products such as grease, soaps, and shoe polish. His
major research interests are biofuels production, wastewater treatment,
nutrient and energy recovery from waste streams and biopolymer production. He
has published more than 43 research articles in peer-reviewed International
Journals, filed for 4 provisional patents (2 from India and 2 from U.S.), 1 granted patent, 5
book chapters, 1 book as an Editor in Elsevier and serving as an editor in 3

Research
Dr. Saravanan is currently working on upcycling nutrients from organic wastes generated at poultry slaughterhouses. He is using a biological approach using nutritional yeast such as Yarrowia lipolytica to convert the nutrients from poultry slaughterhouse wastewater into single cell protein. He is using black soldier fly larvae (Hermetia illucens) to upcycle poultry dissolved air floatation (DAF) solids into animal feed. His current research focuses on valorization of poultry industry waste into value-added bioproducts production. He currently co-supervises a Ph.D. student with Dr. Brendan Higgins and supervises 2 Master's students.
