Short Bio

My program focuses on developing practical, effective integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for specialty crops in the Southeastern United States. I work on key pest issues such as thrips, whiteflies, and emerging invasive species in Alabama and the broader Southeast U.S., with an emphasis on field-based research and real-world applications. In the Vegetable & Fruit Entomology Laboratory, we combine applied research with a strong Extension program, working closely with growers, industry partners, university colleagues, and Extension agents. Our goal is to deliver simple, practical, and reliable solutions that improve crop protection while supporting long-term sustainability.

Research

My research focuses on practical IPM strategies for vegetable and fruit crops in the Southeastern U.S., with an emphasis on Alabama production systems. I develop applied solutions that integrate pest monitoring, insecticide resistance management (IRM), and field-based research to support growers.

Main focus areas include:

  • Pest monitoring and sampling improvement for risk-based decision-making
  • Multi-level experimentation (field, greenhouse, lab)
  • Host plant resistance and insect–plant interactions
  • IRAC-based insecticide rotation programs and reduced-risk strategies
  • Pest dispersal and non-chemical approaches for Organic IPM

Extension Experience

Extension Projects

My Extension program focuses on delivering practical, research-based IPM information for vegetable and fruit growers across Alabama, from small-scale to commercial operations.

Main priorities include:

  1. Developing and delivering training, workshops, and educational materials for growers and Extension personnel
  2. Building regional and interdisciplinary collaborations to strengthen IPM programs
  3. Working directly with growers to improve decision-making and reduce pest management risks
  4. Promoting sustainable practices with an emphasis on reduced and more efficient pesticide use
