Michelle Elmore is an Extension Associate Professor, serving as a beef cattle specialist, within the Alabama Cooperative Extension System in the Auburn University Animal Sciences Department with a 100% extension appointment. She serves as the statewide coordinator for the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association (BCIA), which is a non-profit organization allied with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Alabama BCIA’s mission is to promote, educate, and facilitate the use of performance data, record keeping, and marketing opportunities for interested beef cattle producers in Alabama. Her educational programming centers on performance record keeping as a tool for beef herd improvement for increasing production efficiency and quality. A total herd performance program is provided by the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association (BCIA) Commercial Record Keeping Program, utilizing a specialized, internet-based system, for hands-on application. Educational efforts also include increasing the skill of beef producers in genetic selection by better utilization of genetic selection tools, increasing marketing skills and opportunities for seedstock and commercial cattle producers, and facilitating a bull evaluation program to demonstrate the application of performance measurements, bull development, and genetic selection tools.

  • Coordinates and provides state leadership for the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Association, Inc. (BCIA) by providing educational and marketing programs for Alabama cattle producers.  Alabama BCIA is a non-profit organization whose mission is to educate, promote, and facilitate the use of performance data, record keeping, and marketing opportunities for cattle producers in Alabama.  Alabama BCIA operates in a formal agreement with the Alabama Cooperative Extension System, and Alabama BCIA has been a beef cattle extension program for over 60 years
  • Provides education in beef cattle reproduction, genetics, record keeping practices and systems, breeding animal marketing, beef quality assurance and other best management practices. Serves as a guest lecturer for Beef Production (ANSC 4010), Herd Health Applications (ANSC 3000) and College of Veterinary Medicine Advanced Beef Rotation
  • Specific educational efforts include increasing the skill of beef producers in genetic selection by better utilization of genetic selection tools, increasing marketing skills and opportunities for seedstock and commercial cattle producers, and facilitating a bull evaluation program to demonstrate the application of performance measurements, bull development, and genetic selection tools
  • Consults with beef cattle producers on record keeping collection and analysis through the Alabama BCIA Commercial Record Keeping Program
  • Serves as supervisor of the Alabama BCIA North Alabama Bull Evaluation, including all collection, tabulation, reporting and publication of performance evaluation data and finances
  • Coordinates all Alabama BCIA activities, which include planning, advertising, and organizing for Alabama BCIA sales and events.  Serves as the contact for all Alabama BCIA sales and programs to distribute BCIA record keeping, marketing and membership informatio
  • Leads in drafting and reporting annual plans, goals, and results of state-wide extension projects
  • Promotion of educational programs and events by mass media outlets such as mass email blasts, print ads, website, social media and extension event calendar
  • Manages all Alabama BCIA fiscal and financial operations. Serves as secretary of the Alabama BCIA Board of Directors which requires coordination of quarterly board meetings and annual membership meetings.
  • Development and maintenance of database for the tracking and evaluation of Alabama BCIA membership
  • Serves as registered agent, advisor to the board of directors and manages fund-raising efforts, fiscal and financial accounts of the Alabama Beef Cattle Improvement Foundation, Inc. (BCIF), a non-profit corporation that provides a vehicle for individuals to make tax deductible contributions to support beef cattle performance educational programs, research and activities
