Auburn University’s School of Fisheries, Aquaculture and Aquatic Sciences and Fisheries Business Institute will host a commercial aquaponics workshop Tuesday-Thursday, Oct. 23-25, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. each day, at the Center for Advanced Science, Innovation and Commerce at 449 Devall Drive in Auburn.

Scheduled speakers include several Auburn researchers along with other aquaponics experts, such as Fred Petitt, agricultural and water sciences director at Walt Disney World; Huy Tran, owner of Apopka (Florida) Aquaponic Farms; and James Rakocy, retired University of the Virgin Islands research professor known as the “father of aquaponics.” Presentations will cover fish and plant production and management, water quality, system design, marketing and more.

“Our lineup of world-class speakers for this event is the strongest I’ve seen for an aquaponics workshop,” said Jesse Chappell, associate professor of aquaculture at Auburn and co-organizer of the workshop. “We will dig deep into aquaponics as a commercial business, and our speakers will provide excellent insight and information for all who attend.”

Participants will also travel to the commercial-scale aquaponics facility at the E.W. Shell Fisheries Center on the north Auburn campus for a day of hands-on instruction.

Chappell said the workshop will provide valuable information for all who attend, from veteran Alabama aquaculture producers to newcomers to the industry.
