Michelle is a junior from Autaugaville, Alabama, studying agricultural communications. She is interning with ALFA Farmers Federation in Montgomery, Alabama.

Position title and brief description: Organizations Intern. Michelle assists with Young Farmers, Ag in the Classroom and Women’s Leadership.

Is this your first internship as a college student? “This is not my first internship in college. I completed one with the College of Agriculture, helping plan the Moultrie Ag Expo building last fall.”

How did you find out about the internship? “I have had friends that have interned with ALFA.”

What made you choose to apply? “I know that I needed to grow as a leader, writer and worker, and the setting at ALFA will help me do just that.”

Describe the steps of the selection process. “I emailed Jeff Helms, the director of Communications at ALFA, showing interest in the internship. A little while after that I interviewed and was notified that Mr. Helms had made a spot for me on the Organizations team.”

What are you hoping to learn or accomplish during the internship? “Improving my writing skills with the help of extremely talented editors is my main goal. I will also be working on creating Ag in the Classroom material for Alabama, so I am hoping to learn more about what Alabama agriculture has to offer.”

What advice would you give other students who are hoping to secure an internship in the future? “Don’t be afraid to go after it. You never know what opportunities you may receive if you just ask. My internship position did not exist until I expressed an interest in it. I also have a friend that received an internship with her dream company just because she reached out and sent an email. If you are passionate about something, go try to find an internship in that field.”
